This course explores various types of ecosystems and the communities that rely on them, focusing on how terrestrial ecosystems can be used sustainably for generations to come.

Humans rely on forest ecosystems for crucial resources like water and timber. However, human use of forests has long been unsustainable, threatening ecosystems with species extinction and long-term environmental shifts as a result of climate change. This course focuses on the science behind the determined capacities of different ecosystems, including studies on desertification and extinction. In addition to providing a scientific background on ecosystems, this course presents perspectives from communities who rely on specific ecosystems and how responsible use of natural systems is necessary for the future.
